I had lunch with former colleague, Eugene Paden. I picked him up from his office at ABS-CBN in Redwood City. When he asked me what I wanted to eat, I indicated my preference for sushi. Eugene knows I like “hole-in-the-walls,” so he took me to a place in downtown San Mateo called Old Time Sushi.

It was already a little after 12nn. From the outside you don’t see a lot of people in the area, so you wouldn’t know how many people were inside. But the moment you opened the door you would notice that the place was packed with a lunch crowd. Fortunately for us, since we were only two, we got seated within 5 minutes.
While unassuming, the menu was packed with stuff. It was a little confusing for a while.
Of course we had to have Misoshiri soup.
I had this thing for soft shell crab, something not common in Manila. So I ordered the Spider Roll.
Followed by Spicy Crunch Crab Roll (Crab with spicy sauce and cucumber)
And what looked appealing in the menu… Golden Eye Roll (California Roll topped with scallop then baked to perfection)
I don’t think you can tell from the photo above, but each serving was huge. Around six servings per… so that 18 servings for just two people. We later realized that the ingredients for each roll was pretty much similar.
And to top it off… Maguro Sashimi…. which of course in comparison, was pretty light,
Essentially the place was fantastic and authentic. The food was awesome, albeit a little too much for just two people.
For dessert, Eugene brought me to a nearby ice cream place called Romulo’s where I had Spunoni Ice Cream.
I was stuffed. But in a good way.
I would like to visit the place again.
