Balkan Express – San Juan
Have you ever had Serbian Food? I haven’t. So when my officemates suggested we eat at this place called “Balkan Express” for lunch, I was all go and excited to try it out.
As known to those that follow this blog, especially the food posts, I love small hole-in-the-wall food stops. Once in a while, I am introduced to a real gem of a place here in the Metro. Balkan Express is definitely a MUST TRY.
The menu was full of stuff I have never heard of. Probably the only thing that looked familiar was the GOULASH (and of course the obvious ones like “gourmet burger”). What is a “BATAK?” And how the hell do you pronounce PLJESKAVICA?
Just as we drove up an parked, we were met with the “authentic” owner Marko Batricevic (former UAAP player of the once great DLSU team… hehe, I am from “other school”).
Immediately he recommended a few things. He described the Stuffed Plkeskavica as “ground beef stuffed with mozzarella cheese.” That is what I ordered… he had me at the word “cheese”.”
The place is nice and cozy. It is a little hard to find, especially if you are not used to the confusing streets of San Juan.
Here are some of our orders…
This is my STUFFED PLJESKAVICA… damn, how do you pronounce that…
“Action Shot” below with the oozing cheese.
This is the CHICKEN BATAK. Yup… cheese on this as well.
I will now have to apologize as I was so hungry, I soon forgot to take pictures of the other dishes.
We also had the GOULASH which was a great beef stew. And there was also an order CEVAPCICI which was a burger with 5 beef sausages for a patty.
The food was awesome… and definitely unique. If you are looking for “something different”… try Balkan Express… if you can find it.
