Chicken House and Calea Cakes and Pastries – Bacolod City

Flew to Bacolod City for the Masskara Festival. But while the Festival was the main objective, one thing I have been repeatedly told is that Bacolod is also known for food. My travel buddy Patrick and I spent most of the day just eating.

BREAKFAST

We started with breakfast at Westown Hotel’s Olio Café. I started with a Strawberry Shake. Yum. I thought it was blended fresh strawberries. I actually ended up with a strawberry ice cream shake.

My main course was a Hungarian sausage with mashed potato. The sausage was as expected, but the mashed potato was sooo delicious!

I ended the meal with a thick leche flan! It was like a large cold pastillas… yummy yet deadly. One of the top 3 leche flans I have ever had!!!

LUNCH

Bacolod native Jepoi Ordaniel, suggested that I drop by Chicken House. Chicken house’s main dish of course is the famous Bacolod Chicken Inasal. While it did not originate here, it is certainly one of the destinations to go in Bacolod for the city signature roasted chicken. Note: Our other option was Manokan Country.

There were a few branches to visit, we ended up in the Bacolod Chicken House South.

When we arrived at around 11:30am, the place was still relatively empty. But as 12nn came around, it quickly filled up.

Our meal consisted of… Chicken (of course)

And I ordered my favorite… chicken skin… aaah.  This was simply heavenly!

Dessert

That was good. But Patrick wanted dessert. So we ventured to a famous Bacolod dessert place… Calea Cakes and Pastries. From Chicken House, we hopped on a cab and went across the city.

We got there at around 12:30 or so. The place was only half full at the time and I was assuming that we had just missed the lunch crowd. However, within the next hour the placed filled up… apparently with Manillenos rather than locals. I guess we got there at the right time.

There were a lot of Cakes to choose from… I didn’t know what to get.

I ordered this mouse cake with chocolate and white chocolate. It was so rich and smooth. Perfection.

Patrick ordered a plain old blueberry cheesecake. Delicious nonetheless.

I topped off my order with a Vanilla Milkshake. Mwah! This was good, but not what I would have expected. It felt more like a frozen milk shake. It wasn’t very thick and felt like it didn’t have ice cream in it. It doesn’t mean it wasn’t delicious. Just didn’t feel right.

Lakwatsa’s are always great when topped with a food trip!

Now… on to Masskara!
