Where do I want to go today?

The Chocolate Kiss Café, U.P., Quezon City

A friend of mine recently asked me if I like going to fancy restaurants like those in Greenbelt or Serendra. I quickly responded. “Not really.” While I may, on occasion feast at one of the new restos in GB5, the visits are few and far between. What my palette appreciates more are the hole-in-the-wall variety. Venues that put more emphasis on great-tasting, yet affordable food, than the expensive ambiance and fancy décor.

One such restaurant as one of my personal favorites is “The Chocolate Kiss Café.” My first experience with this restaurant was just a few years ago at their Roces, QC branch. But the original is located inside the Alumni House in the University of the Philippines.

There are actually two separate resaurants at “Bahay ng Alumni” inside UP. One on the ground floor (below)…

… and one on the second floor (which is where I personally prefer)… This is actually the original one which actually has a great view if you sit by the windows. When you enter, you will notice that most of the tables are 3-seater (which I found strange) and their tables are just as… well, strange.

Their website tells of the story of the little café (http://www.thechocolatekiss.com/story/index.html). But the one questions I have left unanswered is… why is it named after my favorite Hershey’s chocolate variant?

Anyway… I started my meal with Tomato Soup. Which is made fresh… definitely not from the can…

For my main course, I ordered my favorite dish, Chicken Kiev

Carlo, ordered Haianese Chicken. Yum!

Oscar had another one of my favorites. Beef Salpicao!

One thing I love with the place, like the Tomato Soup I ordered, is that everything seems to be made from scratch… this also applies to their Iced Tea. Served unsweetened along with a small carafe of syrup so you can sweeten as you wish. And yes… it is “bottomless.”

As always. A great meal.

  1. One of our favorite restaurants ever! You didn’t have any of their cakes??

A friend told me about this Somebody is Bipolar resto along Maginhawa, Sikatuna side. Sorry, can’t remember the name. Supposedly, all the food served there raises ones endorphins. We haven’t tried it yet though. You might want to.

    • Hi Hilda. Yes I have tried their cakes, but I usually am too stuffed after a lunch meal that I don’t indulge in deserts after. A restaurant called “Somebody is Bipolar” is intriguing.

      • Hi,

Is “Somebody is Bipolar” the same as “Van Gogh is Bipolar”? They have the tastiest meals and the ambiance is really great! :) It is also near UP so you can visit it.

        • Hi Ana Marie,

Yes it is. I have yet to try it myself.

  2. Their Hainanese Chicken tastes like glamourized tinola to me…

    • True. But then again, Hainanese Chicken is supposed to taste like Tinola… and so are all other variants, Chicken Rice, Steamed Chicken, White Chicken, etc.

      • Hindi eh. I can’t pinpoint what it is. Parang kulang sa alat and kulang sa ‘bite’ ng ginger.

    • The closest to the most famous chicken rice of Singapore, I think even better.

When I tried a slice of their Devil’s Food Cake on my first visit, I bought a whole cake after.

One time they ran out of it, I was so upset. They recommended the Kahlua Cake and it became another favorite… =)

Perfect with the CAPO playing some relaxing music. I think they’re there on Thursdays…

  3. Hi! My friend shared your blog with me.

In behalf of everyone at The Chocolate Kiss, thank you for the wonderful review!

Our family just had a “planning session” over the weekend, and one of the things we talked about was how we wanted our guests to feel about the cafe. Your review hit the mark! :D So thank you again!

About our name, it doesn’t have anything to do with Hershey’s Kisses. The original business was cakes & cookies. I guess love = kiss. So my tita named it Chocolate Kiss.

By the way, the bipolar resto is Van Gogh is Bipolar. I haven’t tried it, but I hear its good :)
    (Hi Hilda!)

    • Coolness! I really love the simple ambiance of the place. And the food is always refreshing. It truly defines “comfort food”.

  4. Alumni House? Funny. You are definitely from UP.

    • di ba pareho naman yan? Bahay ng Alumni, Alumni House?

      Nope am not from UP

  5. love their devil’s food cake :)
