Kayangan Lake, Coron, Palawan (Day 2, Part 4) – June 5, 2009

From the Twin Lagoons, we were off for out last stop for the day, Kayangan Lake. Apparently its main claim to fame was that it was the “cleanest lake in the Philippines.” That statement alone peaked my interest.

From the Coron Travel Brochure – “Prepare to be mesmerized bu its stately beauty and grace. The entrance itself is awe-inspiring, as is the view from the top. It has been hailed many times over as the cleanest fresh water lake in the country.”

As we entered the entrance to Kayangan Lake… once again we were greeted by the limestone walls and encountered some interesting rock formations. What fascinated me is this rock that seems to be balancing itself on the water.

We entered this small cove where we found boats parked. We ourselves parked our boats and got off. We would then have to go up these steps to reach the lake itself.

As we got up to the top of the steps, our guide asked us to make a small detour to view this cave. Boy was I in for a pleasant surprise!

When we got up to the cave I obviously couldn’t see anything but a big black space. Taking a photo with a flash revealed this big empty cave.

Ok… so my reaction was… huh? What’s the big deal with this cave?

And then I turned around… and that is what made my heart jump… this place is famous, but not for that cave…

WOW! So this is that spot where the famous shot of Coron is taken. From the top we can view the lagoon where we came in. If you look close you can see the roof of our bangka hidden by some trees.

This is one of the most grandiose sights of nature I have ever seen. And it was quite a sight. I would have wanted to stay longer, but there was another group coming in and it was getting pretty crowded.

We then proceeded down another set of stairs down to the lake…

As we got to the lake, there were several groups already there in the water. It was a magnificent sight! While it might have seemed typical, a clear fresh water lake with captivating views of rock walls and foliage.

Around the entrance to the lake, they had built a narrow platform on both sides for folks to jump off from. Also served as a place to leave our bags and clothes.

When I jumped in, I didn’t realize how clear the water is… and how blue it is as well.

It was definitely not salt water… the water wasn’t as dense. I normally don’t like lugging around those orange life vests so it was much more tiring for me to wade in this water…

Meanwhile, I was fascinated with all the snails on the rocks surrounding the lake.

This was definitely a great end to our Island Hopping day!

After around an hour or so, we trekked back to the boat  for the long ride back to the town of Coron
