Hunting for breakfast and a morning walk, Kota Kinabalu – July 24, 2009

Above is the view from my hotel room (photo stitch)… I had great expectations for the next two days
We were off on a slow start on Friday morning. Femee and I got up fairly early to hunt for breakfast and we ended up (of all places) McDonald’s! Not that we weren’t adventurous, but there wasn’t much open at 8am (that we were aware of).

I had a Sausage McMuffin, Hash Brown, and a Milo! They gave us free Tiger Cookies… your typical Oreo-style sandwich cookies w/ filling. It was as expected but, I am not sure why exactly but the sausage patty tasted different (not in a bad way… just different).
Outside McDonald’s I needed to get a picture next to this sign…

Won’t explain my fascination with the sign. If you are Pinoy, you will get it.
Walking about

Walking about was an interesting experience. First thing I noticed was that there weren’t a lot of cars. I mean, there were a lot, but compared to the streets of Manila (or even smaller cities like Cebu or Davao), it wasn’t dense with cars.

Another thing is that there hardly any cross walks. So you had people just crossing wherever they wanted. But wait! It was of course survival of the fittest. You crossed the street at your own risk. Cars won’t stop for you… so if you expect American-style “pedestrians have right of way” attitude… you are out of luck… and you may be run over. Fortunately, I didn’t grow up with that paradigm… so crossing the street wasn’t a big deal.

The place looked like Makati. Only cleaner. As in… it was clean. No litter.
Waterfront Esplanade by day
We walked to The Waterfront to see how it looked like during daylight.

So this is what it looks like during the day

This is where we had the massage the previous night.

The sign of course doesn’t help.

We found a free Shuttle to 1Borneo… this is their version of an SM. More on this later.

We’re back at our hotel, Hotel Promenade.

Off to meet the Sorianos and plan the day’s activities.
